The Threads That Connect Us: A GirlForward Journey

Maryam (right) and her mentor Constance (left) have shared many sweet memories since meeting a year ago!

In a world rich with diverse stories, a single thread binds us together: the journey of every girl who dares to dream, who seeks a brighter future, and who believes in the power of sisterhood. This thread is woven through the fabric of GirlForward, where we celebrate the resilience, and wisdom of young women from various backgrounds, creating a vibrant tapestry of mentorship and support.

Through GirlForward’s mentorship program, we witness how these stories intertwine, creating a lineage of strength that spans generations. Each tale carries its unique magic, but they are all part of a grander narrative—a shared journey toward a girl-powered future.

At the heart of our organization lies the story of Domi. Resettled in Chicago from a refugee camp in Tanzania at just 15 years old, Domi faced challenges that threatened to extinguish her bright spirit. Language barriers, disrupted education, and poverty loomed over her dreams, making it hard to see a path forward. But then came the first stitch in our origin story: mentorship.

With the support of a mentor, our founder Blair, and a community of peers, Domi found her footing. She gained not just academic support but also a renewed sense of hope. The first in her family to graduate high school, Domi's journey became the foundation for GirlForward, inspiring countless others to join our mission.

The thread now brings us to Austin, Texas, where we meet Maryam and Constance. When Maryam first arrived at GirlForward from Kabul, Afghanistan, she was filled with dreams yet unsure how to navigate the complexities of her new life. Constance, a mentor with a heart as expansive as the Texas sky, found a kinship with Maryam as they bonded over their shared love of traveling and dreaming far. Their connection blossomed into a powerful partnership, demonstrating how the threads of mentorship are woven not just to support but to inspire.

Maryam often reflects on how her life transformed through this connection. She recalls her initial struggles with learning English, adapting to new cultural norms, and the feeling of being an outsider in a new world. But with Constance by her side, she began to embrace her confidence and dive into new adventures.

Together, Maryam and Constance have read the American Girl Doll “Samantha” series, experienced new traditions like trick-o-treating, and, most importantly, cultivated a friendship as deep as their favorite color, black. This bond became a new thread for Maryam, a connection that brought out her vibrant personality and brought out new reflections on what life after displacement could look like.

After over a year together, Constance has found herself time and again learning alongside Maryam. She felt inspired by Maryam’s sense of humor and her determination to keep going despite experiencing setbacks. She also admires Maryam for starting a new school, meeting new people, and learning new skills such as steel guitar, drums, and drawing, all within a short period of time.

While reflecting on why she joined GirlForward’s mentorship program, Constance shared that it’s been gratifying to meet somebody like Maryam and learn from her playful nature – Maryam is a natural social butterfly and talented dancer at weddings — as well as Maryam’s steadfast hope to help others and give back to her community.

Constance and Maryam’s gift of mentorship has been an ongoing thread already present in both of their lives. Constance reflects that meeting Maryam was also meeting her mom; the ties between their generations strengthened by their love and support. Similarly when asked about the mentors in her life, Constance admitted that she has never had a formal mentor; rather, the women in her life who have listened, answered her calls, and been there for her have inspired her the most.

In Maryam’s words: “Growing up amidst the chaos and danger that surrounded my family, I learned to find solace in the resilience of the human spirit. Even in the darkest moments, I realized that there is always hope and a way forward.” Within the fabric of GirlForward – an extension of their own families – Constance and Maryam weave a new.

In the spirit of giving back, Maryam and Constance embody the very heart of our organization. Their story is a testament to the idea that when we lift one another, we all rise. The mentorship program at GirlForward is not just about receiving support; it’s about cultivating a culture of giving, where each girl carries forward the lessons learned and the strength gained to uplift others in turn.

“Growing up amidst the chaos and danger that surrounded my family, I learned to find solace in the resilience of the human spirit. Even in the darkest moments, I realized that there is always hope and a way forward.”

Every year, as we gather to celebrate the achievements of our girls, we witness the powerful ripple effect of mentorship. Girls like Maryam are not merely recipients of help; they are agents of change, champions of their own narratives, and leaders within their communities. Through our after-school tutoring, summer camps, and safe spaces workshops, we continue to nurture this cycle of growth, fostering an environment where every girl feels valued and safe to dream.

As Maryam reflects on her journey, she sees how every experience, challenge, and triumph is stitched together by the threads of connection. She dreams of a future where her story inspires others, where the resilience of one girl sparks a chain reaction of hope.

This is why we invite you to join us on this journey. Your support and donations help us continue this ongoing thread of mentorship.
